October 31st (Thu) SSH Fieldwork in the United States ~Day 3~

2020年1月3日 08時19分

Today is the second day of our training at UCON.  In the morning we had a workshop with Woodstock Academy students continuing from yesterday.
In the experiment, first, we confirmed light emission by electron transfer.  Next, we measured the absorption spectrums of light and compared them.  We worked with the group members to prepare solutions and measured spectral peaks of wavelengths.  We were able to improve the experiment communicating in English.
In the afternoon, Dr. Mani reviewed the two-day experiment and then he gave a lecture on his research.  Yesterday’s and Today’s experiments are both called “electron transfer reactions.”  They were related to the contents of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, so Dr. Mani gave us a detail of these principals.  He also explained Mr.Jason’s research, who belongs to his laboratory.  After that, we asked Dr. Mani why he chose an overseas university.  We also asked his ways of thinking as a researcher and so on.  We were able to listen to a lot of very useful stories from Dr. Mani and felt happy.
Thanks to Dr. Mani, we were able to spend two whole days at UCON.  We would like to thank Dr. Mani and make the best use of what we learned and experienced in UCON in the future.

October 29th (Tue) SSH Fieldwork in the United States ~Day 2~

2020年1月2日 08時18分

On the second day of the fieldwork in the United States, we visited Connecticut University.  We had some activities at Faculty of Chemistry with students in Woodstock Academy.  Dr. Mani Tomoyasu who graduated from the science course in our high school works there.
First, we gave presentations of our research.  That was the first presentation in front of English native speakers and we were nervous.  During the Q & A session we were asked so many questions. We managed to answer them.
Next, we conducted the experiment on energy absorption and emission reaction of molecules using green laser with Dr. Mani.  At first, we received the explanation from our teacher.  Then we were divided into two groups and conducted the experiment.  We were confused because everything was done by using English.  Thanks to Woodstock Academy students’ help, we were finally able to exchange opinions in English.  After the experiment, we looked around the whole building of the faculty and Dr. Mani’s laboratory.  We also talked about the contents of the faculty and the system of American universities.

November 16th (Sat) Presentation in the natural science division

2019年12月30日 07時58分

Presentation in the natural science division at the 33rd National Cultural Festival for Secondary High Schools in Ehime

Our students took part in the presentation meeting of the natural science division at the 33rd National Cultural Festival for Secondary High Schools in Ehime.  It was held in Ehime Prefectural Science Museum.  Eight groups participated in it from our school.  A poster presentation was held in the morning.  Three groups – Water Droplet Group, Parantica Sita Group and Spider Silk Group went on to the final.
Parantica Sita Group won the award for an excellent research and also received a recommendation to a national convention.  They give their presentation at National Cultural Festival for Secondary Schools in Kochi.  It is going to be held next year.  In addition, Water Droplet Group and Spider Silk Group won an encouraging prize.  Each group has prepared for their presentations since the midterm presentation was held, so their research improved and their ways of presentation were leveled up.

Acorn Cookie Group, they conducted questionnaire survey

On Saturday, November 9th, Acorn Cookie Group conducted questionnaire survey at the school festival in Tobe Branch High School.
This time they prepared four kinds of cookies.  They included grain of lithocarpus and  sawtooth oaks with them.
Nearly 100 people tasted them and answered a questionnaire.  They thank everyone for trying cookies and answering questionnaires.  Thank you very much for providing us a place, teachers in Tobe Branch High School.

November 9th (Sat) Ume-chans

2019年12月28日 07時51分

Ume-chans gave a presentation with Pottery Group in the design course at the school festival.
SSH Ume-chans and Pottery Group in the design course gave a presentation at Tobe Branch High School Festival.  Potteries were made by the students of Pottery Group using glaze.  They attracted many people and many people purchased them.  As a result, red potteries with plum-petal design were sold out.
Collaborative research of SSH and the design course certainly gets good results.  They won the excellence award of the academic writing contest of Tokyo Kasei University.
